"brunette"
bfa senior thesis exhibition / university of massachusetts amherst / spring 2021

Brunette, a series of works created as a senior thesis, encompasses the partially auto-biographical coming-of-age story of an unnamed young woman in her early twenties who recently underwent a life-altering injury. Left with a new disability, she attempts to rewrite the way she is perceived by booking an impromptu trip to London, where no one knows her. Against her plans to stay anonymous, she catches the attention of a charming young man by the name of Steven, who is growing tired of the city he is from. Through Brunette's fresh eyes, he falls in love with his city again, and by proximity her as well. As they galavant through side streets and visit hidden spots, she never tells him why she came to London in the first place or even her real name. Perhaps all she wanted was to be seen in a light different from her own. The pair is inseparable, until that is, Brunette's trip comes to an end.

Revolving around this story, each piece visually interprets the feeling of being in a new space with an altered body. Digital drawings of the characters, Steven and Brunette, brought them to life. A set of short stories was created and bound into handmade books with covers reminiscent of the main characters' coats. The definitive print, a screen printed map of London engulfed by a silhouette whose only feature is long, dark hair, portrays the cross-section of memorizing the intricacies of city life. Screen printed text along with street view images of London are displayed together in frames, with larger frames holding prints of London's gloomy skyline adorned with tiny screen printed texts. To round out the exhibition, a to-scale replica of a phone box allows the viewer to step inside Brunette's new world.

Brunette was on view in April 2021 at the Herter Art Gallery at UMass Amherst and in May 2021 at the LEG Gallery inside the Studio Arts Building at UMass Amherst.
